During the 2017-2018 school year, Garfield East Elementary School will begin using the Eureka Math program. Eureka Math is a curriculum that focuses on sequencing mathematical progressions into modules (chapters). Student learning should scaffold, building on prior lessons and learning, so that it ties together the skills that they are learning.
If you would like more information on the program, we encourage you to sign up for more information on their website, where you can create an account and access the entire K-12 curriculum. There is an entire section of resources for parents, so that you can better help your child at home. Many times, parents are baffled by the standards and methods in which mathematics is being taught; we often hear the phrase, "we didn't learn it that way when we were in school". The Eureka Math website, hosted by Great Minds, will help you know how your child is expected to learn using a variety of methods.
You can log into the website by clicking the link below:
Eureka Math also has "Homework Helpers", which are grade level books that provide problems similar to those you will see in your child's homework, and give you step by step directions on how to work with your child on each type of problem. There is a cost to the Homework Helpers books if you wish to purchase them; we will have a copy in our Parent Resource center for you to review on your own as well.
How will Eureka Math be different from other math series? Check out this video of a student who has started learning math with Engage NY (the previous name for Eureka Math):
